Choosing the Right PilePad
We’ve got a lil’ something for everything.
With so many pad types on this site, choosing the right setup could be daunting. But don't worry, it's not. And if you ever have a pre-purchase question, fire an email over to help@pilepad.com and we'll design your entire padded setup for you.
Think of this as your dock protection cheat sheet—because the right pad in the right place makes all the difference between "set it and forget it" and "why didn't this work?"
Start with What You're Padding It all starts with what you're going to pad. All our padded products are made for specific use cases dreamt up from field experience.
There are many other applications, but these are our 6 most popular.
What Each Product is Intended For
PilePad XL
XL is named for its extra large width, able to wrap a piling wider than any other product. We like XL for thick marina pilings (14"+ diameter) and if you need padded protection from multiple angles. XL is best used at entry pilings at the bow, where padding at the front, side and rear of the piling is ideal.
Best for: Thick marina pilings, bow/entry points, maximum coverage
PilePad Mid
Our hybrid pad is 15" wide and serves two great purposes: to wrap thinner pilings (13" and less) or for installation at midship pilings. At midship, your boat is likely to make contact from a more perpendicular angle than from, say, the bow. We love recommending XL for bow pilings and Mid for midship pilings.
Best for: Thinner pilings, midship protection, versatile applications
Slim+
Our thickest pad (6") is designed to keep your boat off the dock when you're away, especially to clear those annoying barnacles and other marine growth that latch onto dock pilings. Pro Tip: We spend a lot of time removing those classic black rubber pipes from home docks and replacing them with Slim+.
Best for: Home docks, replacing rubber pipes, maximum
standoff distance
PolePad
Our version of an easy-to-install, durable, guide pole cover to prevent PVC rub-off on your boat. PVC pipes are extremely durable but they lack "kindness" to your paint job. PolePads are made specifically to protect against damage from lift guide poles.
Best for: Boat lift guide poles, PVC pipe protection, custom-fit
applications
Flenders
These are straightforward. We designed our own fender, taking the place of inflatable on-board fenders that could leave you without protection after getting popped. They take the place of your existing fenders, as long as you're ok going fully foam.
Best for: Replacing inflatable fenders, puncture-proof protection,
portable use
The All-Around
This used to be a custom creation. Now, the All-Around has made its way to our store on the coattails of incredible customer satisfaction. The All-Around protects 3 sides of a square piling, ideal for boat lift entryways or your home's square concrete pilings.
Best for: Square concrete pilings, boat lift entries,
three-sided protection
Remember: The best protection system is the one that actually fits your dock. When in doubt, ask—we’d rather help you get it right the first time than deal with returns later.
Pro tip: Most customers end up with a combination of products. Don’t feel like you need to solve everything with just one pad type.
